Brazil
Brazil, a great escape into a tropical paradise. It is a country of mythic proportions, from the passion of Carnaval to the wonder of the dark Amazon. And with a landmass bigger than the United States if you exclude Alaska, it is definitely a place to explore.
The three largest cities; São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, are all located in the heavily populated South East. Rio, one of the worlds most stupendously sited cities, is definately worth a visit.
The South, with the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, stretches down to the borders with Uruguay and northern Argentina, and westwards to Paraguay. At the northernmost point where Brazil and Argentina meet, is the spectacular Iguaçu Falls, one of the great natural wonders of South America. Brasília, the worlds most ambitious planned city, is Brazils capital. Brasilia is the gateway to a vast interior, including the mighty Pantanal swampland, the richest wildlife reserve on the continent.
The Brazilian winter is from June to August, average winter temperatures of the coldest states are between 13°C and 18°C (55°F and 64°F). Rio in summer (December to February) is hot and humid, with temperatures in the high 30°sC (80°sF). Temperatures usually hover around 25°C (77°F) during the rest of the year. Tropical breezes make the northeast coast less humid and stifling even though temperaturss are as hot as Rio. The rainiest part of Brazil is the Amazon Basin and while it is humid, temperatures average a reasonable 27°C (80°F).
It is easy to travel locally in Brazil. Public transport outside the Amazon is generally by bus or plane, though there is the option of a few passenger trains, too. However you travel, services will be crowded, plentiful and, apart from planes, cheap. Amazon river travel is used in the Amazon, though it is slow and can be tough going, it is an amazing experience.
